Literature Review

19th November 2012
peoplelearn.homestead (2012)

Literature review in simple is an overview of research done on a given topic and provided answers related to the questions.
As shown in the website iskillzone(2012), This could be further defined as a critical and an evaluative summary of the themes, issues and arguments of a specific clearly defined research topic obtained from the published (and unpublished) literature.
This website further shows that a literature review could be categorized into two processes.
  1. The search for materials and resources
  2. Writing your literature review
 What counts "Literature"? (canberra.edu, 2012)
‘Literature’ covers everything relevant that is written on a topic. It may be on books, journal articles, newspaper articles, historical records, government reports, theses and dissertations, etc.

How does a literature review differ from other assignments?
(canberra.edu, 2012)

The review, like other forms of expository writing, has an introduction, body and conclusion, well-formed paragraphs, and a logical structure. However, in other kinds of expository writing, you use relevant literature to support the discussion of your thesis; in a literature review, the literature itself is the subject of discussion.

What a literature review is not?
    • Everything (Necessary and Unneccessary) written down.
    • An "Annotated Bibliography" where only is a list of citations to books, articles, and documents are included.  The purpose of the annotation is to inform the reader of the relevance, accuracy, and quality of the sources that have been used by the researcher.
